Diatomaceous earth consists of the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled microalgae. This sample is from commercially available pool filtration media.

Preparation And Use

Preparation
This sample is stored in a capped plastic bottle. A thin layer was applied to a conductive carbon dot to secure it to an SEM stub. The SEM should be set up for low vacuum observation.

Handle powder carefully to avoid creating airborne particles or contaminating other surfaces.
