Routine measurement SOP. The canonical normal-use sequence in one place; use the Aeris queue visual map on the reverse to locate controls taught in Level 1.
Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
1 Instrument startup
- Make sure at least one position in the sample changer is free (no sample holder in place). Booting with all six positions occupied causes a startup error.
- Turn on the mains power switch at the rear of the instrument, if needed. This switch is normally left on.
- Make sure the cover is closed and the interlocks are engaged.
- Press the power button to switch on the instrument.
- Turn the HT keyswitch clockwise to switch on the high-tension (HT) generator.
2 Operation
- Prepare your sample at the sample prep table using the correct holder (see compatible materials and sample prep).
- Remove the plastic sample-changer cover and place the prepared holder in any free loading position.
- Replace the plastic sample-changer cover.
- In the software, select the changer position that matches the physical slot where you placed the holder (see the queue interface).
- Select a measurement program from the drop-down list.
- Enter a descriptive sample name and edit the file name as needed.
- Start the measurement, or click Add to Queue to run it after the current sample.
- Export results to the networked workstation or a USB drive.
- Fill out your information in the X-ray safety log book.
3 Instrument shutdown
- Confirm all data you need has been exported.
- Press the power button to switch off the instrument.
- Turn the HT keyswitch counter-clockwise to switch off the HT generator.
- Remove your sample holders, return them to storage, and leave the sample prep area clean.
Decision required: Curate and document the routine stored-program list; until then retain the canonical direction to choose a stored program and ask staff if none looks right.

The approved map must show the routine queue controls in one current, sanitized native-resolution state.
Decision required: Decide whether HighScore background/peak work and Search Match are independently taught Level 1 operations, a short capability preview, or a later analysis exercise. The provisional primary map covers only the Aeris queue.
Sample-changer cover readiness
Match the physical slot to the software position and restore the plastic cover before starting.
Decision required: Resolve companion-workstation sign-in and export/copy sequence, verify the queue field labels, and approve the changer-cover pair. This draft remains blocked for technical completion, publication, printing for use, and installation.
